Trader Joe's Linguine with Pesto and Tomatoes

Trader Joes Linguine with Pesto and Tomatoes

Pesto:  It literally means paste in Italian. This bag is not pesto at all. Traditional Italian pesto contains basil and pine nuts. Being that pine nuts are $10+ per pound and this bag is under $3, clearly cuts were made. Is the pesto in this dish rich with herbs, yes, but the microwave doesn't help the cause. Other than pasta that is just prepared, heat does not belong near a pesto. Then again, for $3 I'll look the other way and check my food snobbishness and try Trader Joe's Linguine with Pesto and Tomatoes.

The pros:  For $2.99 it's quite reasonably priced, fast, microwaveable, can be made into a meal with some grilled chicken. Good side or add a protein and you have a complete meal.

The cons:  Pesto was disappointing. All herbs and no texture. I know the ingredients list cashews, but I couldn't taste them.

The verdict: ...

Trader Joe's Reserve Bourbon Barrel Aged Maple Syrup

Trader Joe's Bourbon Barrel Aged Maple Syrup

The pros:  Trader Joe's Reserve Bourbon Barrel Aged Maple Syrup is a quality maple syrup.

The cons:  Expensive for what you are getting. This 8 ounce bottle was $9.99 which translates to only 4 servings in a bottle. I wanted to open the bottle and smell bourbon, or at least maple syrup (ok, I really wanted bourbon, what a way to start your day) but it had no smell to it.

The verdict:  ...

Trader Joe's Vegetable Pad Thai Review: A Quick and Convenient Thai-Inspired Meal

Trader Joe's Vegetable Pad Thai box on a green background

Trader Joe's Vegetable Pad Thai is a frozen meal that aims to bring the popular Thai dish right to your kitchen in a convenient format. This vegan-friendly option comes packed with rice noodles, veggies like carrots, cabbage, and tofu, and a tamarind-based sauce to pull everything together. The packaging is designed to make preparation a breeze, offering a quick meal that's ready in minutes.

With flavors that hit all the major notes-sweet, tangy, and savory-this dish promises an easy way to enjoy a taste of Thai cuisine without the hassle of making it from scratch.

TRADER JOE'S VEGETABLE PAD THAI REVIEW

Review of Trader Joe's Vegetable Pad Thai

Flavor and Texture

Trader Joe's Vegetable Pad Thai delivers a balanced mix of flavors, though I wouldn't say it hits the authenticity mark compared to a fresh, restaurant-quality version. The tamarind sauce offers a nice balance of sweet and tangy, but it leans a bit sweeter than I'd prefer. The tofu is soft but lacks the crispiness you might expect in a freshly made Pad Thai.

That said, the noodles cook up well-soft but not mushy. The vegetables add a nice crunch, though they feel like they could use a bit more variety beyond just carrots and cabbage.

Convenience Factor

For a quick, convenient meal that's ready in under 5 minutes, Trader Joe's Vegetable Pad Thai shines. It's great for those busy days when you want something flavorful but don't have the time to cook from scratch. It's also easy to take to work or for a fast meal at home.

Room for Improvement

While the taste is decent for a frozen option, I do think it lacks some of the signature Pad Thai elements, like a deeper peanut flavor or the inclusion of bean sprouts and cilantro. Still, it's a solid option for a quick, easy lunch or dinner when you're in a pinch.

Overall

It isn't bad. But it could be better. Yes, it's vegan but its taste misses certain key elements that make a Pad Thai a Pad Thai. It isn't inedible. In a pinch it's fine, but it isn't my favorite go-to dish.

Commentary on Ingredients

The ingredient list for Trader Joe's Vegetable Pad Thai includes:

  • Rice Noodles: The base of any good Pad Thai, these noodles are soft and soak up the sauce nicely.
  • Tofu: While it adds some protein, it's a bit bland and lacks the crispy texture that fresh tofu often has.
  • Carrots and Cabbage: Adds a mild crunch but could use more variety for a well-rounded vegetable mix.
  • Tamarind-Based Sauce: The sweet and tangy sauce is flavorful but leans more toward sweetness, lacking a bit of the complexity you might expect from authentic Pad Thai.

Overall, the ingredients offer a decent version of a classic dish in a frozen format.

Trader Joe's Vegetable Pad Thai nutrition facts, ingredients, and how to prepare

How to Make Trader Joe's Vegetable Pad Thai

Preparation Methods

  1. Microwave: This is the quickest method. Remove the Pad Thai from the packaging, place it in a microwave-safe dish, and heat for 3-5 minutes until fully cooked.
  2. Stovetop: If you want a slightly more authentic feel, transfer the frozen meal to a pan and heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally until warmed through.
  3. Add Toppings: For added texture and flavor, consider garnishing with crushed peanuts, a squeeze of lime, fresh cilantro, or even a bit of hot sauce.

Recipe Suggestions

  1. Pad Thai Salad: Cook the Vegetable Pad Thai and toss it with fresh spinach or shredded lettuce for a lighter, fresher meal.
  2. Spicy Peanut Pad Thai: Add a spoonful of peanut butter and some chili flakes to the sauce for a spicier, richer flavor.
  3. Pad Thai Stir-Fry: Sauté some extra veggies like bell peppers, mushrooms, or snap peas along with the frozen Pad Thai for a heartier dish

Trader Joe's Battered Halibut

Trader Joes Battered Halibut

The pros:  Trader Joe's Battered Halibut makes for a quick, easy dinner. Crispy batter when it comes out of the toaster oven. Just needs a side dish.

The cons:  Is it as good as homemade? No, nor is it as good as your local pub if you are looking for fish and chips. $8.99 for the box, pricey, but a few filet o fish at McDonalds will set you back just as much. Plus this does taste better.

Trader Joe's Aloo Chaat Kati Pouches

Trader Joe's Aloo Chaat Kati Pouches

The pros: For $2.29 Trader Joe's Aloo Chaat Kati Pouches which contain two pouches. Vegetarian snack, hearty filling reminded me of meat. Crispy pasty. Ready in 4 minutes (unless you want to burn your tongue by not waiting for it to cool down).

The cons:  If you are sensitive to spice, this spice will linger on your tongue for a while. It's medium heat. Filling will be a hit or miss with some people.
