Trader Joe's Sparkling Watermelon Juice

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Sparkling Watermelon Juice on a white surface

Riddle me this- What color is watermelon really? Watermelon Jolly Ranchers seem to be pink, most watermelons I've purchased have a pink interior. So why is there such a terrible mismatch between the color of the box of Trader Joe's Sparkling Watermelon Juice and of the liquid hiding inside these cute cans?

Taste and review

Without the need to photograph everything, you might be a regular person just enjoying a refreshing sip right out of the can.

In my world, I take pictures. Of. Everything.

So when I sat down and took pictures of this I was greeted by a pretty pink-hued box and correspondingly watermelon-ish colored cans.

Then it was time for the pour shot.

First I thought it was my lens or lighting. Nope, an orange-hued drink comes out of these cans.

It was a complete mismatch between taste and visual.

Despite this detail what you have is pretty much natural watermelon flavored soda.

This soda despite the calorie count on the can is just as bad as a regular soda. The main difference is that most sodas are in 12-ounce cans while this can is just under 8.5 ounces. So you are pretty close in calorie count.

But you are getting something that soda doesn't have: fiber and potassium. I'm pretty sure it is reasonable to believe that there might be other vitamins in this drink that just aren't listed. You can see how nutrient-dense real watermelon is here. But again, I have no way of knowing for certain which one of those might have made it into the can.

Despite all this, the drink does taste good. Like drinking carbonated watermelon juice along the lines of Trader Joe's Cold Pressed Watermelon Juice that is seasonally available in the refrigerated section.

So if you are a watermelon AND soda fan you'll probably really like this, but this is a seasonal item and I've already heard rumors this is close to done for the season.

Overall

For $3.99 for four cans it's affordable for a specialty soda.

Would I buy this again? For me, Trader Joe's Sparkling Watermelon Juice is a one-and-done, but if you are watermelon obsessed, this is a good item to try.

Did you try it?  Let me know what you think in the comments section!

Bacon Jerky

Bacon Jerky in a small mason jar on a white surface

Bacon jerky is the low and slow variation of candied bacon. It is cooked slowly to render the fat and ensure a nice chewy texture. This bacon jerky recipe uses three ingredients: spicy sriracha, maple syrup, and of course bacon to deliver a delicious flavor that is bite-sized and snackable.

Bacon Jerky in a small mason jar on a white surface

If there is one thing that doesn't sit on my counter very long, it's Trader Joe's Sweet Sriracha Uncured Bacon Jerky. It's almost like it vanishes from a full bag on the counter to an emptied bag in the trash.

But at nearly $44 a pound, that is an expensive treatment if you are buying it regularly. So to save a bit of cash, I've started to make it at home.

The reason jerky sells for such a premium is because of the amount of time that goes into it, but as a home cook, if you set a timer it's almost no work at all.

I love the texture and the heat in that product. And while this is no copycat recipe, it is good in its own right. I've kept things to just three simple ingredients. And yes, you can play with the ratio if you don't like it with medium heat.

My husband and I have found ourselves nibbling at it as a snack or even putting it on sandwiches.

What does this taste like

Meat Candy. The only accurate way to describe jerky is chewy meat with a nice layer of flavor.

It's not dry but its been dehydrated to reduce the fat content. This recipe in particular tastes like candied bacon jerky as the sweetness is coming from maple syrup.

Jerky has a certain chewy texture to it. If you were to try to cook it at higher heat you'll get a crumbly texture.

Tips for making this

  • Use regular cut bacon, not thick-cut bacon as you want the meat to dehydrate.
  • You can use a dehydrator or you can use your oven. I found 200F in an oven to get a good texture much like beef jerky. Likewise, I've used 145F in a dehydrator.
  • You can cut the recipe in half and store the bacon in your refrigerator until you are ready to prepare it.
  • Elevating the bacon above the cookie sheet is essential to ensure the fat has room to escape and that heat can evenly circulate around the bacon.
  • If your bacon is really fatty, then consider trimming that part off. I wouldn't worry about the streaks in the middle, but some brands are fattier than others.

Variations

The following flavors also pair well with bacon:

  • The following spices also make a good compliment to the bacon: black pepper, or garlic powder.
  • The following sweeteners would also work: brown sugar or honey.
  • You can play with the ratio of sweet to spicy as well. If you like it sweeter, add an additional tablespoon of brown sugar, or make it 3:1 sweet to spice.

Step by step directions

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 200F. In the meanwhile, remove bacon from your refrigerator to come up to room temperature for about 15 minutes. And slice in half.

Step 2: Mix together the marinate.

Step 3: Place bacon on a cookie sheet with cooling rack over it. Brush on the sauce.

Step 4: Cook the bacon in oven for 2.5 hours until bacon has rendered much of its fat and achieves your desired texture.

Step 5: Allow to cool on rack for about 10 minutes. Place in air tight container or enjoy as it is now ready to eat.

Trader Joe's 5 Layer Dip

An unopened package of Trader Joe's 5 Layer Dip

It's been a while since Trader Joe's added anything to the dips and hummus options. They've taken away items, but not too much has been added back. Well, consider this a vegetarian (at least based on the ingredients) spin on the familiar 7 layer dip. Trader Joe's 5 Layer Dip is new, delicious, and just needs something to dip it in or scoop it on.

Trader Joe's 5 Layer Dip review pin showing an unopened package of the dip for Pinterest

Taste and review

For the most part, much of this dip is pretty basic. You have a bunch of mostly familiar elements.

But they were made for this product specifically. The Pico De Gallo is much chunkier than the refrigerated pico available. And it doesn't have much in the way of heat.

The 4 cheese blend is also different compared to its refrigerated counterpart as well. It is finely shredded as opposed to the thicker shreds in the bagged variety.

As for the guacamole and sour cream I couldn't compare it to anything on the shelf as sour cream for the most part just tastes like sour cream. The guacamole was pretty smooth.

Regardless, the hummus is a delicious and unexpected compliment to the sour cream, cheese, pico, and guacamole. It tastes far more like black beans than hummus. And almost reminded me of a layer of refried beans with the texture of hummus.

For $4.99 it isn't too badly priced.

As an added bonus this is more than just a dip. Remember that no so great Taco Kit I reviewed recently? Well, this would make a far better topping for tacos, burritos, or homemade nachos than that kit ever could.

There is just one problem with this kit. If you like spice, just understand that in this plastic tub there is pretty much none to be found. Not even a little bit.

So bring your own delicious spicy add-on to this if you are a spice junkie.

And there might be a second problem too. Most 7-layer dips look so presentable and pretty. This looked like the morning after a party when someone walked in at 6 am. The ingredients were unevenly distributed and it wasn't very presentable. But it tasted darn good.

Overall

Would I buy this again? Yes, I would buy Trader Joe's 5 Layer Dip again. I can't wait to use it in ways other than scooping it out with those new Elote Corn Chip Dippers.

Trader Joe's Opera Cake

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Opera Cake

The longer I'm at this blog, the more patterns I see. I've seen products come and go. And come back again. Sometimes after years of disappearing. If you are familiar with Trader Joe's A Dozen Sweet Bites, you might recognize this cake. In fact, Trader Joe's Opera Cake hasn't been on shelves in many years.

Trader Joe's Opera Cake Review Pin for Pinterest

Taste and review

When I tried Trader Joe's Sweet Bites I fell in love with two of the varieties. We lucked out last year when Trader Joe's released the Macaron aux Framboises into freezer shelves. But as quickly as it appeared, it also disappeared.

In fact, one astute reader, Alek, pointed out that the item wasn't in fact new, but hadn't been seen since around 2011. Now we have Trader Joe's Opera Cake which has been on a hiatus for about that long.

What comes out of this box is just 8 pieces of cake. But unlike the bites, this is a larger serving. Perhaps three bites. But it is just a larger variety of what is sold in the Sweet Bite set.

This is essentially like a chocolatey Tiramisu cake. There are lots of delicious layers.

These layers are so thin that it is hard to tell them apart in each bite, yet the combination of them all yield a delicious dessert.

So if you are around people who are just pickish around dessert, this will probably satisfy that craving for something chocolatey and sweet. The coffee pairs so very well with the chocolate and highlights it nicely.

Since 2011 the price has gone up just a touch to $6.99, but this will make for a classy and delicious dessert that looks like it came from a French bakery. Probably because it did, just from France.

Overall

However, like my beloved Raspberry Macaron Aux Framboises Cake, I worry that this will be a final opus for an indeterminate amount of time. It has disappeared off of shelves before and I wouldn't be surprised if it does it again.

Would I buy this again? Yes, Trader Joe's Opera Cake is a very well-priced, delicious, and tasty dessert that looks and tastes far more expensive than it actually is.

Trader Joe's Egg Frittata

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Egg Frittata on a marble surface

I was beginning to wonder when we would see another cauliflower item appear on Trader Joe's shelves. And now, it has found its way into breakfast through Trader Joe's Egg Frittata. But don't worry, the taste of cauliflower was quite muted.

Trader joe's Egg Frittata review pin for Pinterest

Taste and review

If you've never had a Frittata, it is similar to an omelet or quiche. It's egg-based, but this one more egg white. Don't get me wrong, these are nice and yellow, but they aren't as dense as a quiche would be.

Plus the addition of the egg whites keeps the cholesterol in this in check. And if you enjoy eggs because of the protein, Trader Joe's has added in whey protein to up the count in this.

It has a nice flavor of swiss cheese and each bite tastes light. But I did end up having mine with some hot sauce. The pairing of spice with this does work, so if you are finding this a bit plain I used some sriracha to heat things up.

The cooking directions were on point and the end result was very good in terms of taste. It was a super light pillowy egg dish with the taste of swiss, onions, and chives. The cauliflower was more or less in the background.

But I do take issue with this. It's priced at $2.99. There are two frittatas in this package. So if you buy this, understand this is just one serving.

And while I did have this for dinner, I looked at a recent receipt from Trader Joe's. I've been enjoying the new Carol's Pasture Raised Eggs which are sold at a premium price over conventional eggs. That dozen eggs set me back $3.99. But that also bought me a full dozen eggs.

I don't have any issue with this product in terms of taste or how easy it is. It cooked perfectly and had a good flavor. But when there are only two in the package, it left me wishing the package had four which I could justify the price for a simple egg dish.

Overall

Would I buy this again? I would consider keeping a box of Trader Joe's Egg Frittata around for those rough mornings, but otherwise, as excited as I was to see a new cauliflower item around, the price did not win me over.
