Trader Joe's Gnocchi alla Sorrentina Review: It’s Giving Grandma Energy, Minus the Effort and the Judgment

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Gnocchi alla Sorrentina

Trader Joe's Gnocchi alla Sorrentina is a frozen Italian entrée made with soft potato gnocchi tossed in a tomato-based sauce with mozzarella cheese. Imported from Italy and sold in a 16-ounce bag, it's meant to channel the spirit of Naples, minus the airfare and three-hour dinner reservations.

Review

Let's be honest: frozen gnocchi can be a gamble. But this one starts off strong. You open the bag and think, "Okay, this looks like a pizza exploded and froze itself into chunks." You're not wrong. What you'll find inside are icy pucks of tomato sauce, discs of mozzarella, and potato gnocchi that look like they're mentally preparing for their hot bath.

Once it hits the pan (or microwave), it turns into a surprisingly cohesive meal. The gnocchi come out tender and pillowy-no gumminess or weird chew. The tomato sauce is bright and a bit sweet, and the mozzarella melts into that perfect cheesy cling that sticks to your fork and your dignity. It's the kind of meal that makes you go back for seconds, not because you're still hungry, but because your taste buds started chanting, "Again! Again!"

Is it restaurant-level Italian? No. Will Nonna be offended? Probably. But if you're looking for a midweek pasta hug that costs less than your iced coffee habit, this is it.

A few notes: if you cook it on the stovetop, it gets nicely saucy. In the microwave, it works too-but the cheese can separate slightly and the gnocchi texture gets softer. Add some fresh basil or a sprinkle of grated parm if you want to impress yourself. Or anyone watching.

How to Serve

  • Best method: Sauté in a pan with a splash of water and a drizzle of olive oil for a better texture and richer flavor.
  • Top it off: Add more mozzarella, grated Parmesan, or fresh herbs.
  • Serve with: A simple green salad, garlic bread, or a glass of red wine that costs less than $10 but tastes like it doesn't.

Creative Uses

  • Serve it over a bed of wilted spinach to pretend it's healthy.
  • Bake it in a ramekin with more cheese for a personal-size gnocchi gratin.
  • Use it as a filling for a "lazy lasagna" with layers of spinach and extra sauce.
  • Toss in pre-cooked sausage or roasted veggies for a more complete meal.

Cooking Directions

This can be made in two ways:

  • Stovetop- Place 2 tablespoon of water in a skilled on medium heat. Stir gently until sauce and gnocchi melt together and warm through in about 7 minutes.
  • Microwave- Heat on high for 4 minutes. Stir. Microwave in 1 minute increments until heated through (about 3 minutes longer)

Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Mini Heart Cookies

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Mini Heart Cookies box

There is something special about the holidays and Trader Joe's. I'm not mentioning this because Valentine's Day is coming up. I'm reflecting on this past holiday season. As a foodie, going in there was almost as exciting as going into FAO Schwartz as a kid. Now kids won't even know what that is. Alas, Trader Joe's has found a way to extend the holidays for just a bit longer. And perhaps your waistline too.

Taste and review

So returning to shelves is this classic from last year.

I'm going to admit a truth that I feel some people don't talk about enough. Love can sometimes make you heavier than you already are. If it isn't the dinners, then it might be the desserts. Or watching too much Netflix together. Either way, between the holidays and Valentine's Day it's geared to break your will from your New Year's Resolutions.

I was truly sad when my last box of Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Stars and Mini Mint Stars were gone. They were both so very good. And oh so seasonal. When I saw this box, my heart lit up (perhaps by stomach too). I deeply hoped that they had just reshaped my beloved cookies.

They did. With one minor change. This isn't like the previous two products I mentioned in the fact that the center is neither mint nor plain shortbread. Nope. The center of this is a dark chocolate shortbread cookie.

Everything else remains the status quo. It's chocolatey, tasty, and crisp. With not too many nonpareils. There is just enough chocolate to coat the outside. The cookie is just the right thickness.

For $2.99 these are a great find, but I have a feeling they won't be on shelves too long. If you already miss Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Stars or Trader Joe's Mini Dark Peppermint Stars, then feel free to pick up a few.

Or perhaps as customers, we can rise up and demand Easter Eggs and Fireworks shaped cookies to get through the rest of the year. Ok, maybe not, but I do wish these could find a way to stay on shelves all year long.

Overall

In either case, these are tasty seasonal treats. If you see them and like them, then pick up an extra box as it will be a while until we see the next seasonal cookie of this variety.

If you can't make it to Trader Joe's then, you can find these on Amazon through third-party sellers.

Trader Joe's Blushing Apple Tart

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Blushing Apple Tart on a pink background

Most of the new products hitting shelves this week aren't of the healthy nature: there are new almond butter cups, candy coated peanuts, and this Blushing Apple Tart. So snacks and dessert items seem to be the order of the day. Trader Joe's Blushing Apple Tart is the new addition in the freezer aisle.

Taste and review

Now, I love a good dessert. And I've tried quite a few tarts and tartes over the last couple of years. Some are better than others.

As an added bonus, this was a good excuse to turn the oven on as here in NY the temperatures are set to plunge. Any added heat is always welcome this time of year.

The standout quality here is those bright pink apple slices. Even though this tart spent a good amount of time being frozen and about 45 minutes in the oven, those apples still kept their color.

Not only did they keep their color, they also did a great job of keeping their texture.

But the other standout item here is the almond creme filling. Being that the ingredients list almond, butter, sugar, and eggs, this is essentially frangipane.

Frangipane is lighter and fluffier than marzipan, which is a confection more people might be familiar with. But the frangipane here is a very fine layer. It's enough to balance out the tart nature of the apples.

If you are tasting something sweet it is absolutely the almond creme here.

The pastry here is pretty standard for Trader Joe's desserts. It has layers but doesn't puff up too much when baked. It's crisp around the edges and less so where the topping touches.

A day or two later, it was sufficiently firm to be picked up by a fork.

But as an added bonus, this does end up looking like the picture on the box, which is always a good thing in my mind.

This is listed as three servings although I think you can push it to four given its shape.

Overall

For $4.99 for three servings it's a pretty good deal. It's far cheaper than anything you can buy at a bakery. Best of all it would make for an impressive looking last-minute dessert.

Would I buy this again? Yes, Trader Joe's Blushing Apple Tart is tasty, affordable, and well done for something that comes out of a freezer box.

Blood Orange Margarita

This colorful and seasonal Blood Orange Margarita is perfect for when you see Blood Oranges available in your local grocery store. This is a colorful variation of the classic margarita recipe that uses fresh, seasonal ingredients, as well as premium tequila. A perfect way to use this gorgeous seasonal fruit with a show-stopping cocktail.

A backlit picture of a blood orange margarita garnished with blood oranges

So just the other day I was at Trader Joe's and the food sample being distributed wasn't something that was processed or really pre-packaged was offered: blood oranges. Yes, these cute little fruits have hit shelves. And while I love to snack on them, I also don't mind them in a margarita. The ones available were labeled as "Moro." I tend to not see these oranges all year long.

Pictured below are two oranges: a navel and a blood orange. The color is different in the fruit but also on the exterior. Most blood oranges I've seen also seem to be a bit smaller as well.

A navel orange sliced open compared to a moro blood orange

When Are Blood Oranges in Season?

You might find blood oranges hitting shelves between December and May. In fact, they may not even be the same variety of blood oranges. Blood oranges come in several varieties. The most common varieties include:

  • Moro- The most common, native to Sicily, and is more intense in flavor and aroma than a regular orange. It is also more bitter.
  • Taracco- This is the sweetest of the three varieties available and also contains the most Vitamin C. This variety is seedless.
  • Sanguinello- Similar to the Moro variety but has "veins" of blood coloring instead of the intense red color. You probably won't find this at the early part of the season as many don't mature until February.

Making this perfectly

  1. Don't buy cheap tequila. You want to avoid anything that is a Mixto. Be sure it says 100% Pure Agave. Mixtos only need to be 51% agave, which is why many of us in college ended up not liking tequila or have bad memories of tequila. You want 100% pure blue agave tequila.
  2. Blood oranges are nearly as pigmented as beets. Therefore, be sure to wear an apron or some other protective clothing, otherwise, you will be testing out laundry detergents.
  3. No need to buy a margarita glass rimming set. As long as you have kosher salt, you are good.
  4. Because of the different varieties of blood oranges, you may need to adapt the amount of simple syrup. I had the Moro variety available when I made this, which is more bitter. Therefore, this recipe might need to be adapted if you find other varieties.
  5. Rimming the glass- There are different ways of going about this. Feel free to figure out which one you like best.
  6. Ice. One of the single most important and overlooked ingredients. If your ice is funky, your cocktail will be too. If you live in an area where the water tastes off, then make ice with bottled water or buy ice.
  7. Use only freshly squeezed juice. The bottled lime juice never tastes the same as fresh.

Watch me make this (30 Seconds)

Directions

Step 1 (optional): Rimming the glass. Do this first, as I personally am so excited about a cocktail, that I remember this step after I pour it into a glass and it is too late. Lesson Learned: Do it first so you don't forget. You can use the juice from the fruit or simple syrup to achieve a beautiful rim. Dip into kosher salt on a small plate after you have rimmed the glass. Set aside.

Two ways of going about rimming a margarita glass.

Step 2: In a cocktail shaker tequila, fresh blood orange juice, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup (agave nectar can also be used here). Add ice to shaker. For this recipe I am skipping the triple sec to enjoy the sweet tart taste of the blood orange with the lime juice.

The progression of adding the ingredients to this blood orange margarita. From adding tequila, blood orange juice, lime juice, and simple syrup

Step 3:  Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds until the sides of the shaker are cold. Pour into a filled glass of ice and garnish with a blood orange slice.

The difference between using quality ice and regular ice. To get clearer ice boil water and fill a ice cube container. Place in freezer. This will eliminate a good portion of the cloudiness:

Trader Joe's Organic Creamy Cashew Fiesta Dip

An unopened container of Trader Joe's Organic Creamy Cashew Fiesta Dip

Does anyone else celebrate Taco Tuesday? I think we celebrate it on a lot of days during the week. I have a soft spot for nachos in particular. Who doesn't love cheesy chips? I adore them. Just not Trader Joe's Queso Dip. One of the cardinal rules of a dip is that it should never be watery or thin. This vegan dip does a better job of being cheesy than queso.

Trader Joe's Organic Creamy Cashew Fiesta Dip review pin for Pinterest

Taste

For those of us who don't eat vegan regularly, cashews are the answer to many situations where a creamy texture would be appreciated. Which is the case here.

I made vegan queso dip last year using a Minimalist Baker recipe. I was shocked how good it turned out. It was everything that was promised. It was pourable and relatively quick to make.

So I was already familiar with the concept of swapping out cashew for dairy. But how would that translate into a pre-made refrigerated dip?

Quite well.

Now, when I first tried this I had it cold. It wasn't my thing. So it sat in my refrigerator for a couple of days.

I gave it a second try. This time a small glop landed in a bowl and was placed in the microwave.

True to form, I got out some Trader Joe's Restaurant Style Tortilla Chips. It was exponentially better heated and it was way better than the queso dip they sell.

It isn't a spicy dip despite the presence of jalapeno peppers. But it is well-flavored and seasoned. The texture is pretty close to a good dip, not quite queso, but heated it up it can be poured.

There is the slightest texture from the nuts, but otherwise, this is actually a far better product that the queso dip in a jar. Keep in mind, that this is way better heated up so the temperature does matter.

Overall

Overall, this vegan dip is well done, organic, and flavorful. And it's well priced at $3.49.

Would I buy this again? Yes, I would buy this product again. If I need a dip and a salsa won't cut it, I am totally reaching for this. Worth a try if you see it.
