Trader Joe's Ruby Cacao Wafers

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Ruby Cacao Wafers

Behold! A perfectly timed product gracing shelves in time for Valentine's Day that is chocolate, but quite different. The color you are seeing here is not the result of coloring of any sort. And apparently, this is a new type of chocolate you can be sure that you'll be seeing more of whether you find it at Trader Joe's or available commercially.

Trader Joe's Ruby Cacao Wafers review image for Pinterest

[feast_advanced_jump_to]

What is ruby chocolate?

So most of us are familiar with white, milk, and dark chocolate. If you are scratching your head about Ruby Chocolate, don't worry. There is a reason for it.

You see, this isn't like the more familiar pink wafers that you might see sold at Michael's craft store. Nope, this is a brand new type of chocolate. This ruby chocolate was introduced to the market in 2017 by Barry Callebaut, a Belgian Swiss chocolate company, but has been in the works since 2004.

While Barry Callebaut denies any use of genetic modification, what we do know is that this is made from unfermented cocoa beans which have this as a natural color. This company also registered a patent back in 2009 for the process to create a "cocoa derived material."

In other words, when Trader Joe's says this is made from a "unique process." In other words, it's patented and they probably don't want to go too much into the production detail.

And since Barry Callebaut is a Belgian candy maker, it makes total sense that these are made in Belgium.

What does it taste like?

To compare this to white, milk, and dark chocolate is a bit unfair. This does have a taste all unto itself. However, if I had to pick one of those to tell you in advance, I'll admit this tastes more like a bar of well-made white chocolate with a really natural fruitiness to it.

However, to call this white chocolate is 100% incorrect. This is chocolate all its own. It has a similarly smooth mouthfeel. And in terms of flavor, the berry is what hits you. There are super distinct notes that reminded me of strawberries and raspberries.

As for the tang, I'm not sure how much of this is natural and how much of it might come from the citric acid. The tang here is subtle.

It's sweet, which in the case of Trader Joe's Ruby Cacao Wafers, makes sense as the first ingredient is sugar.

However, if you are vegan, I'm sorry to report that the third ingredient is whole milk powder. So, these are NOT vegan-friendly.

What do I think of these?

At nearly $10 a pound, this isn't cheap, but in line with good chocolate. But at $2.99 for this 5-ounce bag, it was affordable enough.

While I saw that Trader Joe's melted these on their website and paired it with pretzels, I'm not sure I would do the same. Fruit perhaps, but there was something delicate where I just wanted to enjoy these by themselves.

Yes, they are a pretty color. And the timing of this release couldn't be better as February 14th is Valentine's Day. But this is very nuanced chocolate. When consumed plain, you get the fresh fruity subtleties that you really don't get elsewhere without the flavor being added into chocolate.

Overall

Is it nice to try? Absolutely! Is it a must-try? Maybe. Do I think we will see lots more ruby chocolate in the future? Absolutely. Would I buy this in place of white, milk, or dark chocolate? No. These are a natural complement to those varieties.

In short, I'd be willing to buy this again.

This product piqued my interest immediately. I had to know what it tastes like. I picked up two bags of these and look forward to munching and sharing them.

Quick update for 2020. It does not look like this item is returning to shelves this year. If you want something similar then try this bar instead. It is of similar quality in terms of taste but isn't in wafer form. You can pick it up at the grocery store or on Amazon:

Chips and Snacks, Chocolate, Dessert, Trader Joe's chocolate, dessert, Trader Joes, Trader Joes Review

Trader Joe's Best Frozen Foods

Trader Joe's Best Frozen Foods list image for Pinterest

So far, I've reviewed more than 300 items in the freezer section alone. So what are Trader Joe's Best Frozen Foods? Some of the items are available year-round. Other items are seasonal. I think it's worthwhile to see what was most loved. Perhaps you'll see items you are familiar with.

Others you might have walked past a few times. Regardless, I've broken this down into sections. I mean, is it possible to say that Macarons are better than Orange Chicken? Totally unfair comparison in my mind. So here is the best of the best from the almost 300 items I've tried.

Best of the Frozen Dessert Aisle

If it is something sweet you are craving, then here are my favorite picks. I prefer to start with dessert.

An open box of Trader Joe's A Dozen Macarons Varies

If you ever try to buy Macarons at some fancy French place, you'll pay almost as much for one as you do this entire box. You can see my review these macarons and the equally good chocolate and vanilla ones here.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Macaron Aux Framboises

One taste of this, and I was in love. Unfortunately, I have not seen this item much since it return to shelves. I hold out hope that this will be back soon. You can see my full review here.

A fully cooked Trader Joe's Chocolate Lava Cakes

If you are a chocolate fan, then this Chocolate Lava Cake is an item worth looking into. Vanilla ice cream and whipped cream are great pairings. If you don't have the freezer space, then perhaps the salted caramel chocolate mug cakes in the grocery aisle are a better match.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Mini Hold the Cone Vanilla Ice Cream Cones package

For the record, there isn't a bad flavor pairing in this line of Hold the Cone! There is Vanilla and Chocolate available year round. But the Pumpkin and Peppermint are excellent seasonal options. These little ice cream cones will make you understand why they list calorie counts both by the serving and by consuming the whole box.

Trader Joe's Sublime Ice Cream Sandwiches

This is a Chipwich but oh so much better. This is all truth in advertising when they say "sublime." You can read my full review of these here.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Cookie Butter Cheesecake Bites

Just enough Speculoos flavor to make these special. Cut into small pieces in an attempt at portion control. If you like cheesecake these Speculoos Cookie Butter Cheesecake Bites are worth a try. Or if you want to feel inspired for ideas on what to do with a jar of Speculoos you can check out my Best Things to Make with Cookie Butter.

Best of the Frozen Breakfast Aisle

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Chocolate Croissants

Trader Joe's line of Croissants rival those of your local bakery. Both the chocolate and almond varieties are excellent. Just be aware, the almond ones do leak a bit, but that molten filling (when cooled) is amazing.

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Hashbrowns package from the side on a yellow background

Whether you toast these or air fry them, these pre-made Hashbrowns are easy and tasty.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Belgian Waffles

I wasn't sure whether I should these Belgian Waffles should be added to the breakfast or dessert list. Which ever way you enjoy them, they are very well done.

A fully cooked Trader Joe's Chocolate Filled Crepes

These Chocolate Crepes could be breakfast or dessert. For a frozen crepe they were very good.

Best Indian Options

So there are a lot of home runs worthy items that rival that of your local Indian restaurant. If you've ever been scared or intimidated to try Indian food, consider these an inexpensive introduction.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Paneer Tikka Masala box on a green background

If it is frozen and ends in Masala, it is good. The standout item here in this Paneer Tikka Masala is the spinach rice.

Trader Joe's Chicken Tikka Masala box on a brown background

Chicken Tikka Masala is often many people's introduction to Indian food. Once again, this rivals what you can expect in a restaurant at a fraction of the price and in a freezer entrée.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Vegan Tikka Masala box on a purple background

If you are vegan, Trader Joe's didn't forget about you. Trader Joe's Vegan Tikka Masala is as good as the other tikka masala varieties. Even if you aren't vegan, it is hard not to love these little vegan bites.

Trader Joe's Korma Fish Curry box as sold in stores on an orange background

If you are open-minded to having fish in the microwave, then here is another solid option. Just understand the fish isn't the star here. In Fish Korma Curry, the sauce is the star here. If only they jarred it and sold it.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Lamb Vindaloo box on purple background

There aren't many options if you enjoy lamb and want a frozen entrée. Trader Joe's Lamb Vindaloo takes you on another culinary adventure in the Indian section.

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Malabari Paratha

This Malabari Paratha is the newest addition to the Indian line. If you like bread with lots of layers, then this is worth a try.

Trader Joe's Tandoori Naan bag

You can get Naan in two varieties: tandoori and garlic. Both solid options if you need some bread to dip or as a side.

Best Asian

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Mandarin Orange Chicken finished on a white bowl on a green background

There is a reason this comes out on top of Trader Joe's customer survey. Trader Joe's Mandarin Orange Chicken is as close to ordering from your local Chinese restaurant without going out.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Scallion Pancakes

These are on par with what you can get in the frozen section of your local Asian grocery store. These scallion pancakes are easy to make and delicious to eat.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Steamed Chicken Soup Dumplings

These Chicken Soup Dumplings end up in my cart quite often. They are flavorful, have ridges for dipping, and are ready in about 2 minutes.

Trader Joe's Pork Gyoza Potstickers

Another item that is on par with what you would find in the frozen aisle of an Asian grocery store are these pot stickers. While I personally like the pork the best, they do sell other varieties including chicken, the now discontinued sriracha seafood potstickers, and thai shrimp gyoza.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Pork Shu Mai

Another classic Asian dumpling, the pork shu mai are well done as are the chicken variety. However, the chicken variety does come with its own packet of dipping sauce.

A fully cooked bowl of Trader Joe's Kung Pao Tempora Cauliflower with rice

Right out of the oven, this Cauliflower Kung Pao tempura holds up very well. However, only cook up what you need. Like regular tempura, the reheat isn't as great.

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Chicken Cilantro Mini Wontons

These mini chicken cilantro wontons are perfect on their own, as an appetizer, or in soup.

Best Pizza

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Wood Fired Naples Style Uncured Pepperoni Pizza box

A solid pizza choice if you love the classic pairing of pizza with Pepperoni. This pepperoni pizza is affordable and ready in a reasonable amount of time.

An unopened bag of Monteli Organic Pizza Crusts bag

My only non Trader Joe's item on the list. If you've walked past these, you shouldn't. Monteli Organic Pizza crusts are worth picking up if you have passed these by.

Best Quick Meals

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Sweet Potato Gnocchi bag

Out of the gnocchi options available, this one stands out in terms of taste. The others can be made using dry gnocchi instead.

Trader Joe's Peruvian Style Chimichurri Rice review #traderjoes

Chimichurri Rice is flavorful and makes for an easy side. Add to soup to make it more filling or add a protein to make it a full meal.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Quinoa Cowboy Veggie Burgers box

While Quinoa Cowboy doesn't taste like a regular burger, it doesn't have to. This is flavorful and gets its "meatiness" from black beans.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Panko Breaded Tilapia Fillets

Whether it is a quick fish dinner or fish tacos, these Panko Breaded Tilapia come out crisp every time.

Trader Joe's Diner Mac and Cheese

If you are willing to not look at the calorie count on this package, then this is as good as homemade mac and cheese.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Stacked Eggplant Parmesan

If you want an easy meal for one, the consider this single meal eggplant parmesan. While not as pretty as the package, Trader Joe's Stacked Eggplant, is a solid choice.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Eggplant Cutlets

I love fried eggplant. I don't love the mess that that makes. Trader Joe's Eggplant Cutlets are a perfectly easy way to enjoy that freshly fried eggplant taste.

Trader Joe's Thai Sweet Chili Veggie Burger

If you need a break from Quinoa Cowboy Burgers, then Trader Joe's Thai Sweet Chili Burgers are a delicious side that is Asian inspired in taste.

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Japanese Style Fried Rice

All the familiar Japanese flavors in an easy to make vegan entree or side dish. Delicious and quick Trader Joe's Japanese Style Fried Rice is a staple in my household.

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Cauliflower Gnocchi bag on a green background

Trader Joe's Cauliflower Gnocchi is a love it or leave it item. If you don't mind cauliflower taste AND you are willing to saute these, you'll be rewarded with a lightened up rendition of gnocchi.

Best Appetizer

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Creamy Spinach and Artichoke Dip

I discovered these through a sample in store. I've been hooked to Trader Joe's Creamy Spinach and Artichoke dip ever since. Perfect for sharing and you'll want to pick up more than one.

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Big Soft Pretzels

Since they introduced these, I have consumed so very many bags of these Pretzels. And of course my fair share of pub cheese to go along with them.

Trader Joe's Mini Chicken Tikka Samosas box on a red background

Appetizer and Indian at the same time. The exterior of these are crispy and the inside is full of chicken tikka flavor. These can also make for an easy dinner as well. You can read my review of these here.

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Party Size Mini Meatballs

Trader Joe's Meatball selection is solid. So whether you are reaching for the party ones, beef ones, turkey ones, or meatless ones, they're all good options. And yes, if you add sauce or doctor them up they are even better.

An unopened box of Trader Joes Vegetable Birds Nests

These are crispy and remind me of a really tasty onion ring, in nest form. With awesome dipping sauce. You can read my review of Trader Joe's Vegetable Bird's Nests here.

Best Seasonal Items

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Camembert Cheese and Cranberry Sauce Fillo Bites

These Camembert Cheese and Cranberry Sauce Bites are a perennial favorite, but they are only available during the winter holiday season.

An unopened box of Trader Joes Chocolate Chip Waffles

These Chocolate Chip Waffles were a seasonal item that I only saw during the 2016 holiday season. They haven't been around and I've been asked about them ever since. I wish they would bring these back.

Trader Joe's Cinnamon Roll Wreath

If you want a taste that is closer to homemade Cinnamon rolls, then consider this Cinnamon Roll Wreath the next best thing. They need to be risen overnight and you'll have to make your own glaze. These are available from Thanksgiving to New Year's.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Mini Brie en Croute

These mini Brie en Croute take advantage of melty brie and pairing it with a pastry to create what look like little melted cheese volcanoes. These are available in the late Fall/Winter.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Rustic Apple Tarte

Yes, Trader Joe's sells Apple Blossoms year round, but there is something really delicious about this slightly larger tart. You can read my review of this Fall seasonal item here.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese

This Fall seasonal favorite is a classic spin on mac and cheese. It is filling and flavorful without being too squashy.

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Mashed Sweet Potatoes

Here is Trader Joe's Mashed Sweet Potatoes, a perennial favorite that shows up around the Fall, in time for Thanksgiving. Minimal ingredients and comes in small circles so you can measure out how much you really need.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Cauliflower Pancakes

This was new for 2018 and was really well done. This cauliflower rendition of the potato latke was flavorful and a real surprise. You can read my full review here. This was available for the winter 2018 season.

Trader Joe's Candy Coated Chocolate Peanuts

Trader Joe's Candy Coated Chocolate Peanuts unopened and on a dark surface

I guess Trader Joe's was feeling many people's resolve about New Year's Resolutions. They knew we would cave. So they came out with a long list of sugary items to expedite this process. They've welcomed vegan cookies, sunflower seed butter cups, and now these.

Trader Joe's Candy Coated Chocolate Peanuts review Pin for Pinterest

Taste

Now, there are a number of items sold at Trader Joe's that are essentially duplicates of other more famous items.

We have Crispy Cookies with Belgian Chocolate that are like a reshaped Milano Cookie. There are Mini Dark Chocolate Mint Coins which reminded me of Thin Mints but better (don't tell your local Girl Scout this). There are Joe-Joe's Cookies which are essentially a Trader Joe's answer to an Oreo. You have the Sublime Ice Cream Sandwiches which are improved Chipwich sandwiches.

You also have Candy Coated Chocolate Drops which are essentially M&Ms with natural colors.

Now you have these, Trader Joe's Candy Coated Chocolate Peanuts. They're naturally colored Peanut M&Ms. Oh, and they're non-conforming in shape and size. The milk chocolate tastes about the same as the Candy Coated Chocolate Drops.

However, for the most part, they are priced well at $0.99 which isn't a bad deal when you compare the retail price of most bags available by the checkout of most grocery stores, drug stores, or vending machines.

The M&M bag is currently sold in a 1.74-ounce size. And for comparison's sake, this is about .75 ounces larger.

Now, with a larger size comes a larger comes with a heavier caloric intake. Unlike M&Ms, this bag isn't quite as easy to close either. At least the little paper-ish packaging allows for easier folding that this plastic bag.

However, I think Trader Joe's could be doing more to push the envelope here. I think if M&Ms can come out with creative and experimental flavors, I'm shocked that Trader Joe's hasn't beaten them to the punch.

Overall

But time will tell. It's not a bad snack when you compare it to the original. Would I buy it again? If I feel snakish enough I would reach for Trader Joe's Candy Coated Chocolate Peanuts again.

Trader Joe's Pancake Bread

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Pancake Bread

I love a good coffee cake. In fact, I posted a recipe here for an easy crumb cake just the other night if you feel like turning your oven on. If you aren't in baking, here is a store-bought option for you. However, this Trader Joe's Pancake Bread isn't quite a coffee cake. It's not quite a pancake either.

Trader Joe's Pancake Bread review Pin for Pinterest

Taste

Here is another hybrid food that has found its way onto shelves. Now, I love a good coffee/crumb cake. So this had some high expectations.

However, this is labeled as pancake bread. I'm not sure what that was supposed to mean.

So into my shopping cart, it went.

The servings sizes seem about right. And I didn't feel the need to binge on this either. One slice seemed sufficient for a breakfast item. My husband tried it too.

We both came to the same conclusion. It eats like a very light crumb cake, but on the back-end, it tastes like pancakes that you would get from a diner.

Maybe it's the maple syrup that is in this, or perhaps the buttermilk in it that lends the familiar pancake flavor. But be warned, there is a good amount of sugar in this, so watching your sugar intake, might not be for you.

Now, this crumb topping is sparse. And while it does lend a certain amount of cinnamon and texture to the top, I didn't feel like it made it much of a crumb cake at all. But then again, it isn't advertised as such.

Overall

For $3.99 it's a decent-sized loaf at a decent price. It's a mild hybrid food that does work in the combination it is presented in. Would it be well heated up? I don't see why not. Would I love less sugar in the bread? Absolutely.

But it is worth a try if you are curious. Just be warned, this doesn't have a long shelf life. But with this, I'm not sure that will be a worry.

Did you try it?  Let me know what you think in the comments section!
