Trader Joe's Multipurpose Umami Seasoning Blend

An unopened jar of Trader Joe's Multipurpose Umami Seasoning Blend

Trader Joe's sells Umami take two. Yes, this isn't Trader Joe's first dive into selling us something that is simply just umami. A couple years ago they sold Umami paste. That paste was all sorts of umami from tomatoes, to mushrooms, parmesan cheese, olives, balsamic and other forms of umami. This product is clearly different.

Trader Joe's Multipurpose Umami Seasoning Blend review Pin for Pinterest

Taste

This product isn't trying to be all the umami rolled into a tube. Don't get me wrong, I loved that little tube. But that tube has been discontinued.

Its biggest flaw was the obvious question: What the hell do you do with it?

I found ways of using it, but I know a lot of people struggled with how to incorporate that into a meal.

On the side of this jar you are still left with the same problem. It just says, "Any dish."

So here is what you are tasting when you get this. First off, this is primarily salt. So if you salt and pepper your first, I'd cut back on the salt before you overdo it.

Next, this has a mushroom flavor. What wasn't expected was the pepper.

I don't typically read through the ingredients before I try something. So there is a bit of bite and heat with this product. It's mild, but it is there. Nothing unpleasant. Likewise, the mushroom flavor here isn't nearly as assertive as the salt.

Now, what pairs well with a mushroom flavor? Here are some ideas for flavor pairings: almonds, arugula, bread crumbs, butter, carrots, parmesan cheese, chicken, cream, fish, garlic, lemon, onions, parsley, pasta, polenta, pork, potatoes, shallots, steak, soup, turkey, and tomatoes.

Odds are if a recipe you are using one of those listed items, this product might pair well with this item.

Overall

it isn't as awesome as Trader Joe's Everything But the Bagel Seasoning blend and I don't see myself using this as much. But as a product that is closer to a seasoning salt, it isn't bad.

For $2.99 it's inexpensive and not a bad item to try (as long as you don't mind mushroom flavor).

Did you try it?  Let me know what you think in the comments section!

The Worst Things I've Tried from Trader Joe's

Pinterest image for The Worst Things I've Tried from Trader Joe's

I got an email today from Trader Joe's about their annual survey of most loved food items. In fact, they do this every year. That had me thinking: Where is the list of things we don't like and don't care for? In the spirit of "out with the old and in with the new", here is my take on the worst things I've tried at Trader Joe's. I've done nearly 1,000 Trader Joe's reviews. No, I haven't tried it all. Not even close. But from what I have tried and written about I've got enough to choose from.

This is completely unscientific and my own humble opinion. It is also the opinions of those who shared their thoughts with me as well.

While I have liked, if not loved, most of what I've tried here on this blog, there have been some that have stood out in all the wrong ways. I did also put it out there to my followers on Instagram to see what they said. Their thoughts and commentary follow. If you have something you would like to add, then feel free to leave a comment at the end. I can't wait to see what made your "Trader No" list.

The Worst Things I've Tried

This list is presented to you in no particular order. As they popped into my mind, they were added to the list.

No surprises here with Trader Joe's Beef Cabbage Rolls. Here is something that I wished I could have un-smelled and not tasted the soggy cabbage leaves here. Most cabbage rolls I've had had a sauce. This one needed something. And with microwave only directions it did super weird things to the cabbage here. They also looked like a certain overused brown emoji.

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Beef Cabbage Rolls

The holiday season so often brings Trader Joe's A-Game. This year, this Spicy Shrimp Appetizer Duo just didn't measure up. The flavors were out of whack. I managed to consume two of these before they found their final resting place at the bottom of the trash can.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Spicy Shrimp Appetizer Duo

Now, when I posted this review I heard from a lot of employees of Trader Joe's that something had gone terribly wrong with this product. So bad that it appeared in the Fearless Flyer and then had to be pulled from shelves. Here are the undercooked balls of dough that had so much potential. Sorry Donut Bites, the ones I tried earned you a seat here. But I'm totally open to re-reviewing at a later date. I have a soft spot in my heart, tummy, and thighs for a rematch with any donut.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Donut Bites

Sushi. The beauty of sushi is its freshness. No matter how many times I feel weak (read hungry) and the wrap section has been cleared toward closing time, I find myself reaching for sushi. This tale almost always ends up with regret and a trip to the drive through afterwards. You can see my review of Trader Joe's Tempura Shrimp Crunch Rolls here.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Tempura Shrimp Crunch Rolls

In the same section as the sushi, are a series of wraps. A series of calorie heavy, under-flavored and mildly soggy wraps. I always wondered why the tarragon chicken salad wrap was sitting there at the end of the day. I wonder no more. On a side note, it does seem that they are "redoing" the wraps at my store, so some of these might need to be re-reviewed.

In fact the ONLY wraps I'll pick up these days are Trader Joe's Cubano Wrap and the Bean and Cheese Burrito. Otherwise, I don't want to be bothered with them until they make the wraps better. I'm happy to eat my words, if the end product is better.

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Tarragon Chicken Salad Wrap

The bar that bites back. This one is on the list on sheer design flaws. I think they wanted a bar for Jaws and not one that actually fit into your jaw.

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Milk and Dark Chocolate Butterscotch Bits Bar

It ain't easy being green. And this combo of Pesto and Gouda just didn't work.

Trader Joe's Pesto Gouda Cheese

Here is another item where the combination didn't work and the picture from the box couldn't be further from reality. This must have been a talented food stylist to pull off that photo. You can read my review of the Wild Salmon in Yogurt and Mint Sauce here (and see some real pictures of the product).

Trader Joe's Wild Salmon in Yogurt Mint Sauce

Another case of poor execution. The cheese here is fine, but tread lightly with the marinade. There is nothing quite as taste deadening as a bunch of black peppercorns freshly ground. In your mouth. As you chew. You can read my review of Trader Joe's Goat's Milk Cheese Medallions Marinated in Herbs here.

And yes, there have been failed desserts. This molten salted butterscotch macaron had so much potential. But it left molten and just had a burnt sugar taste to it.

Trader Joe's Molten Salted Butterscotch Macarons unopened box

Apple Pie Cheddar Cheese. Who approved this? Thankfully, I haven't seen it on shelves since.

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Apple Pie Cheddar Cheese

The now discontinued Clams and Mussels are another item that just didn't make the grade. Too many broken shells. It just didn't work.

An unopened box of Trader Joes Steamed Mussels

Look at those shrimp on that bag. Boy are you going to be disappointed when you open the bag. So much heat, so little shrimp in this Spicy Thai Shrimp Fried Rice.

Chicken Piccata. There are some people who love this. I can not be counted among the fans. It looked terrible. For me, the taste wasn't much better. And yes, most chicken in the refrigerated aisle leave something to be desired. Even basics like Chicken Parm have been somewhat rubbery at best.

Trader Joe's Chicken Piccata

This had so, so, so very much potential. I had dreams of carrot cake cookie butter. I felt lied to. Ok, maybe if i had read the jar before sticking it in my mouth, I wouldn't have felt that way. Who am I kidding? This was NOT my thing.

The Time the Comment Section Clearly Felt I Got Things Wrong

There are times as the author, your readers send you a resounding message in the comments section that you got things egregiously wrong. Now, I never tried the original product and that is where the conflict is. Originally, the product that preceded this one required it to rise overnight. The new bag doesn't require that. Which product is in question? Trader Joe's 8 Mini Croissants. You can read the full review here (and all the comments too).

Readers Respond with their Worst of List

Right before the holidays hit (ok, before Halloween) I put it out to my followers on Instagram to get a feel for their thoughts. They were very generous in sharing their thoughts (many of which were completely unfiltered). Because of the holidays and all the new items hitting shelves, this article did get pushed off. Here is what those who responded shared with me. And there were lots of green, sick emojis on some of the comments people sent me:

While not the worst thing I've tried, this Chicken Enchilada isn't great. You are better off going with the refrigerated chicken enchiladas with the verde sauce.

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Chicken Enchiladas

This little box also got an honorable mention from a few commenters. It was ready in two minutes and tasted like it was. It was mushy noodles with a not so great pad thai sauce. In fact, one follower wrote in, "They used to have these fake Asian take out boxes in the dry good section that SUCKED."

Trader Joes Pad Thai Noodles in a box

Another reader wrote in, "Teriyaki Chicken from the frozen area-I look one bite and threw it out." I've only bought Trader Joe's BBQ Chicken Teriyaki once. For the review.

Trader Joe's BBQ Teriyaki Chicken

This veggie panang curry had its share of haters too.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Vegetable Panang Curry

The dislike was real for this Seafood Paella too:

Trader Joe's Seafood Paella bag

One reader chimed in about the Honey Walnut Shrimp and said, "The shrimp alone were great but the sauce was disgusting!"

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Honey Walnut Shrimp bag on a blue background

Even the humble silver dollar pancakes weren't safe. One reader called them "yucky."

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Organic Silver Dollar Pancakes box on a blue background

And then some readers admit to an unpopular opinion

And yes, this hit my inbox and made me laugh, "The Cauliflower Gnocchi! I know everyone loves it but it tastes like a ball of paste!" I love it, but there is a solid crowd who don't care for it one bit. And yes, having an unpopular opinion of a Trader Joe's product could be an article all by itself.

In Conclusion

While I've tried nearly 1,000 items at Trader Joe's (and no, I'm not sponsored, paid, affiliated, or work for them), this list is pretty short all things considered. Trader Joe's has brought us a lot of value, easy, affordable and tasty items.

But they just all can't be winners. I still applaud them for trying and can't wait to see what they bring us this year. And yes, 2018 did bring us a fair share of winners too.

Cheers to 2019 and (hopefully) not adding anything to this list.

Your Turn!

Trader Joe's Steamed Chicken Soup Dumplings Review: Soup-er Star or Just Dumpling Around?

Fully cooked Trader Joe's Steamed Chicken Soup Dumplings on a spoon.

Trader Joe's Steamed Chicken Soup Dumplings come in a 6-ounce package containing six dumplings nestled in a microwave-safe tray. Priced at $3.49, these frozen delights feature tender dough wrappers encasing seasoned chicken and a savory broth, offering a convenient and comforting meal option.

Review

Let me start with this: if you told me five years ago that I'd be microwaving soup-filled dumplings in under two minutes and calling it dinner, I'd have laughed. But Trader Joe's Chicken Soup Dumplings have changed that.

These little dumplings are surprisingly legit for a freezer aisle find. Once heated, they're warm, pillowy pockets filled with seasoned chicken and just enough broth to feel like comfort food. Are they going to rival your favorite dim sum spot? No. But will they make you feel cozy, satisfied, and slightly smug that you made them in under two minutes? Absolutely.

The wrapper is soft and tender, though if you microwave it too long, it can go from delicate to gummy real quick. If you have time, steaming is the way to go, it keeps the texture silkier and a bit more like a restaurant-style soup dumpling.

The broth inside is savory with hints of ginger, garlic, and onion. It's not overly salty, which I appreciate, but it also doesn't have quite the depth of a true bone broth. Still, it gets the job done and feels very soothing-especially when you're curled up on the couch watching your 12th consecutive episode of whatever you're bingeing.

The filling? Surprisingly flavorful. It's not mushy or bland-just shredded chicken with seasoning that tastes intentional rather than like an afterthought. One thing to note: the dumplings are a bit broth-light. You won't get a dramatic soup explosion with every bite (sorry, TikTok), but you will get a satisfying mix of broth + meat + dough in each piece.

They're small-six dumplings per pack-and while they work as a light lunch or snack, you'll probably want a side (like rice or sautéed greens) if you're calling this dinner.

Would I buy them again? Definitely. I've already bought them again.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's Steamed Chicken Soup Dumplings offer a convenient and tasty option for those craving a touch of comfort without the hassle. While they may not rival the authenticity of restaurant-quality xiao long bao, their ease of preparation and satisfying flavor make them a worthwhile addition to your freezer staples. Trader Joe's Rolled Corn Tortilla Chips

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Rolled Corn Tortilla Chips

Oh Trader Joe's, you know most people won't keep the New Year's Resolution. So they are giving us another popular product double. And yes, this adds to a long list of product doubles that I've tried, especially in the snack food section. Behold, Trader Joe's answer to the popular snack: Takis.
Trader Joe's Rolled Corn Tortilla Chips Review Pin for Pinterest

Taste

If you've never had a Taki before in your life, then allow me to explain. They are rolled tortilla chips doused in a fiery chile and lime seasoning mix. Picture a spicy lime Dorito rolled up and that is pretty much a Taki. And the bag I tend to see the most is their Fuego variety found in a purple bag. They do sell a Nitro one with Habanero, but I haven't been able to find it to try it.

The kids at work love them. I see the Taki brand of chips all over. Those purple bags are everywhere. I had one and I was shocked by how much kid's taste buds have changed. When I was in school everything was very sweet. Takis are savory and hot. I can't even imagine how hot the Nitro must be. Fuego was hot enough to slow me down.

While Trader Joe's answers to Takis is similar, there are some differences. Yes, these are crunchy rolled tortilla chips that are heavily coated in a chile-lime seasoning blend with some key differences.

If you are more of a wimp when it comes to heat, then these are the more mild answer to the fuego variety.

These are far more limey. These also didn't dye my fingers a red color as strongly as takis did. Not a deal-breaker, because who doesn't love a finger full of the delicious powdery substance?

These are labeled as being gluten-free.

Overall

I liked these. Would I reach of these over a bag of Takis? No, but I think they are a reasonably good copycat product. I wouldn't say no to these either. As for repurchasing these, I wish these had landed closer to Superbowl time, as by then most people have abandoned their resolutions for the year.

For $2.49 they are an affordable chip, gluten-free, and a more tart take on Takis. It will be interesting to see if they introduce other

Trader Joe's Spicy Thai Eggplant

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Spicy Thai Eggplant on a white wooden background

After having some of Trader Joe's Brookies, I guess my next view has to be some lighter fare. And just in time for dieting season is this frozen entree. From what I've been seeing posted around the internet, there are going to be some new additions in the freezer aisle. Certain items are scheduled to be discontinued like Trader Joe's Cream Cheese Broiche Pastries, their French Toast, and even the tasty Sunflower Seed Drops are rumored to be discontinued. So with extra freezer room, I guess we will be seeing new items hitting shelves.

Pinterest image for Trader Joe's Spicy Thai Eggplant review

Taste and review

Here is one of them. There is already a vegetable Pad Thai option at Trader Joe's in the freezer section. From a quick glance at the ingredients, this appears to be vegan although the package does not appear to be labeled as such.

And while the packaging here is the familiar hue of purple that many associates with eggplant, there is none of the purple variety in this box. Nope, this is green eggplant.

And as if they timed this well, consuming this entire box will only be 200 calories. There is no rice in this one, however, you might want to consider making some to make up for a few of the flaws with this dish.

First off, this is quite salty. Eat this whole package and its half of all the sodium you need in a day. And then there is the other detail, which is medium to medium-hot in heat.

The package seemed to assure me that it would be that bad. I disagree. It downright slowed me down.

I'd have a bite. And then have to pause. And then I'd have another bite. If I were at work, I'd need about 90 minutes to eat this without rice.

If you are willing to look past the over-salted and under-stated heat level mentioned on the package you do have a flavorful eggplant dish. The Thai basil flavor comes right through and is a pleasant compliment to the flavors here. And if you are careful enough, the chilis do add flavor as well as a strong kick. Mine contained multiple red little peppers of pure heat.

I did have one other issue with this-the microwave instructions. I stopped mine at the 4-minute mark. Not only to remove the cover but to stop the cooking process. Mine was steaming hot, so I recommend checking yours to see if it is done.

Overall

Otherwise, for $3.49, it wouldn't be a bad option for lunch. I'd still recommend bringing a side with this.
