Trader Joe's Cleansing Oil

Trader Joe's Cleansing Oil on a white surface

New products make me happy. Especially when those new products just happen to be in the health and beauty aisle of Trader Joe's. This week Trader Joe's hit us with not one, but two new items: this cleansing oil and a Cucumber and Citrus Face and Body Wipes. Since my skin needs a bit of hydrating this far into winter, I decided to start with the cleansing oil.

An unopened bottle of Trader Joe's Cleansing Oil

Review

If you suffer from dry skin or winter dry skin a moisturizing product has quite a bit of appeal this time of year. Moisturizer is a priority if not body butter and lotion.

So if I can at least feel less itchy and dry after a hot shower, then I'll happily embrace any product that can help get that done.

Now, the packaging of Trader Joe's Cleansing Oil is nothing fancy. It will literally blend into the rest of the products on the shelf, especially the Jojoba Oil. And what the packaging lacks in prettiness, it makes up for in performance.

This is quite different from say Trader Joe's Ultra Hydrating Gel Moisturizer. It makes the promise of being ultra-moisturizing. This  is labeled as more of a nourish with the fine print of "luxuriously smooth and moisturizing."

For those of you who aren't into fragrances, this is quite muted even to my sensitive nose. There is a subtle fragrance but nothing that stands out or makes you feel like you are sniffing almond-scented furniture polish either.

Nope, this is a muted almond fragrance at most. And a really unique shower experience.

The oil that hits your skin or hands turns to a white soapy substance that rinses off nicely. While you are in the shower your body feels really nice.

After a good towel drying, you'll still feel hydrated but not oily. I think the best way to describe this is balanced.

The dry spots were banished, but I didn't feel as oily as I do after using Trader Joe's Lavander Salt Scrub. Would I maybe still want to use some lotion afterward? Perhaps, but maybe only every other evening.

However, just be mindful after using this, you'll want to make sure to rinse your shower out well as any residue of this product will leave behind a slick surface.

Frequently asked questions

The following are some commonly asked questions about this product

Can I use Trader Joe's Cleansing Oil on my face?

Yes, you can use it on your face. Just be careful around your eyes

Overall

For $6.99 this isn't the cheapest product on shelves, but a little goes a long way here too. However, if you are allergic to nuts I'd skip this one.

Would I buy this again? Trader Joe's Cleansing Oil gets a yes from me. This is a really nice addition to an ever-expanding health and beauty aisle that has some real sleeper hits to it.

Trader Joe's Buffalo Style Chicken Dip

An unopened tub of Trader Joe's Buffalo Style Chicken Dip

Trader Joe's has hit us with three new dips: Trader Joe's Buffalo Style Chicken Dip, Trader Joe's Black Bean Dip, and Trader Joe's Green Goddess Dip. So I figured I would start with this one since it is the most familiar.

An unopened container of Trader Joe's Buffalo Style Chicken Dip

Review

So every holiday making Buffalo Chicken Dip is my go-to item to bring to someone's house.

It's quick to throw together and with a handful of items that are easy to keep in the pantry or freezer and you will be ready to go.

At its most basic level, Buffalo Chicken Dip is often just chicken meat, cream cheese, hot sauce, and a dressing mixed together. Sometimes with a layer of cheese on top or sometimes mixed in.

Here this is cream cheese and sour cream. It also omits the vinegary tang of hot sauce. Which makes it taste like Buffalo-style hot wings minus any bones and the fatty layer of skin.

But when I make mine there is no question there are decent-sized chunks of chicken.

However, when trying this I was missing out on the real chicken taste. This is way more dip in the sense of smoothness. Because this dip had a strange texture whether I had it cold or warmed up.

It tasted as if it had been sitting in a food processor for far too long. Yes, the chicken was present but seemed like it had been obliterated.

If you are wondering about the heat, this only comes up to mild heat. Nothing really too spicy here. Yes, there is warmth, but nothing that would rise above that.

But the dominant taste and texture do end up being the sour cream which is a darn shame.

Frequently asked questions

Readers often ask these questions about Trader Joe's Buffalo Style Chicken Dip

How much is Trader Joe's Buffalo Style Chicken Dip?

The 12-ounce container costs $4.99.

Can you heat up Trader Joe's Buffalo Style Chicken Dip?

Yes, this can be microwaved for 2-3 minutes. Two minutes for half a package or three minutes for heating a full container.

How long does Trader Joe's Buffalo Style Chicken Dip last?

My best estimate would be to enjoy this within 3-5 days in the refrigerator.

Overall

For $4.99 this is a bit much for what this dip offers in terms of taste. Maybe in a wrap where we can up the texture level can be elevated this would be better.

Would I buy this again? Sorry, I don't see myself buying Trader Joe's Buffalo Style Chicken Dip again.

Trader Joe’s Chicken Fried Rice Review: A Quick and Flavorful Freezer Staple

Trader Joe's Chicken Fried Rice bag

Trader Joe's Chicken Fried Rice is a versatile freezer staple that brings the flavors of takeout straight to your kitchen. Packed with seasoned chicken, scrambled eggs, carrots, peas, and rice, this dish offers a balanced and satisfying meal in minutes. Whether you enjoy it as-is or pair it with other dishes, it's a convenient and budget-friendly option for busy nights.

The frozen fried rice is pre-cooked and ready to heat, making it an easy choice for lunch, dinner, or even a quick snack. At $2.99, it's a great value for a freezer meal that's both tasty and filling.Trader Joe's Chicken Fried Rice review

Review of Trader Joe's Chicken Fried Rice

Taste and Texture

Trader Joe's Chicken Fried Rice delivers a well-rounded flavor with a subtle hint of soy sauce and sesame oil. The chicken pieces are tender and well-seasoned, while the veggies add a pop of freshness. The rice itself is fluffy, not overly greasy, and reheats well, maintaining its texture and flavor.

I appreciated the inclusion of scrambled egg, which adds richness and authenticity to the dish. While it's mildly seasoned, the neutral flavor profile allows for easy customization with your favorite sauces or spices.

Convenience and Value

This frozen fried rice is a lifesaver for busy weeknights. It's ready in just a few minutes, whether you're using the stovetop or microwave. The portion size is generous, easily serving two people as a main dish or more as a side. At $3.99, it's an affordable and reliable option for a quick meal that doesn't skimp on flavor.

Overall

Realizing that chicken was not terribly noticeable, I decided to add my own chicken to it, in the form of a fried egg. Will it scratch the itch of fried rice? Yes. Is it as good as your local Chinese establishment? Probably not. Will you need to add protein to this? Yes. Beef, chicken, shrimp, pork, tofu, or a fried egg are needed to make this go from a side to an actual meal.

Is it meant as a side? Probably. If you are like me and fried rice an be the main meal be prepared to add to this. But for $2.99 (it used to be $2.29, but everything seems to be going up) I'm not going to complain too much. You'll spend far more at your local Chinese eatery.

The rice was fine, the veggies were cooked through. The bits of scrambled egg I could take or leave, but my hangup was the lack of chicken. Because it is called chicken fried rice and I wanted this to eat like a meal.

It just didn't. You are totally going to have to supplement this or serve it as a side dish.

Because this is priced more than the Vegetable Fried Rice that's where my issue is. There wasn't enough chicken in this to even remotely think that this was worth the extra money.

Trader Joe's Kale Gnocchi

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Kale Gnocchi

New Year, New You. Or maybe not. Maybe some New Year's Resolutions have been made. Perhaps one of those resolutions was to eat more greens. Well, if you are looking for something green then this little bag of Trader Joe's Kale Gnocchi has got you covered.

Trader Joe's Kale Gnocchi in an unopened package

The taste

But let me tell you, it isn't easy being green. Or green food for the most part.

When I first saw this appear on my social media feed, I didn't know how to feel. Actually, I was in the category of "I don't know about that one." But I've never been one to skip a Frankenfood Trader Joe's food creation.

And much like the Chocolate Gnocchi these will not win any beauty pageants.

When you look at the directions, they recommend sauteeing these. To which I agree. These are best served crisp and I would not try these out of the microwave. They might do well in an air fryer.

But aside from the fact that they look like they just came out of the backside of a cow, there is the biggest question: How do they taste?

And to me, they didn't quite capture that gnocchi pillow-y-ness.

I kept getting a unique aftertaste: it reminded me of hummus. That distinct grit was there the whole time and that comes from the presence of chickpea flour.

This also explains why I didn't feel like I was having gnocchi also.

If I had to compare this against another Trader Joe's product, I'd say it is closest to the veggie patties they used to sell, just starchier. And they also left the kale flavor pretty plain, although they did take out some of the bitterness that can sometimes come with kale.

But overall, I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. I was satisfied with a few bites of these. But at no point did I feel like they were a great replacement for a bowl full of potato pillowy softness.

Nope, these are veggies in a dumpling shape pretending to be gnocchi. For $2.69, these are priced at roughly the same as other gnocchi varieties.

The packaging

These are sold in a plastic bag. Unlike the sweet potato gnocchi very little is stuck to the sides of the bag. The bag is not resealable.

Is Trader Joe's Kale Gnocchi keto-friendly?

No, this has 27 net carbs per serving and is unlikely to fit into such a low-carb diet.

How much does Trader Joe's Kale Gnocchi cost?

Each 12-ounce package cost $2.69.

A comparison of gnocchi

And believe me, I've tried all the gnocchis they offer: Cauliflower Gnocchi, Chocolate Lava Gnocchi, Gnocchi alla Gorgonzola, Gnocchi alla Sorrentina, Inside Out Stuffed Gnocchi, Sweet Potato Gnocchi, and even the dried gnocchi which I haven't reviewed yet (but are always on my pantry shelf).

If I had to recommend them in order of the best to the worst:

  • Sweet potato gnocchi
  • Cauliflower gnocchi
  • Inside Out Stuffed Gnocchi
  • Gnocchi alla Sorrentina
  • Gnocchi alla Gorgonzola
  • Chocolate Lava Gnocchi
  • and lastly Kale Gnocchi.

Overall

Would I buy this again? Sorry, this kale gnocchi just wasn't for me. Maybe if you need a break from your usual veggie side, perhaps you'll be a better fit. As for me, this is a one time purchase.

Trader Joe's Vanilla Overnight Oats

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Vanilla Overnight Oats

I love a no-effort breakfast. In the mornings I will always choose snooze over pretty much any morning activity that requires any form of effort. My Keurig has a timer so it is warmed up when I am up, I'll shower the night before, I make my lunch the night before, and I will literally do anything to get as much sleep as I can before the morning eventuality sets in. I am sure that I am not alone on this one either.

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Vanilla Overnight Oats

Well, if this sounds like you then perhaps you have tried overnight oats yourself.

Taste & Review

As a meal, they're easy to prep ahead. Just add your milk of choice to oats and any desired fillers like chia seeds the night before. By the time you wake up, boom you have a breakfast that is ready for you.

Now Trader Joe's has pushed us into even less effort. However, that comes at a cost.

For $1.99 these are seemingly inexpensive. However, when you look at how much a big bag of rolled oats will set you back you will realize you are paying quite a premium for an inexpensive staple.

But in exchange, you are getting an item that is ready-made for you AND it has a pretty long shelf life for a refrigerated item.

However, that shelf life does seem to have some trade-offs. I've seen some of these looking like they have a layer of slime on top of the oats.

The oats are, well, mushy. But that is pretty much how overnight oats go. I much preferred this at room temperature than cold out of the refrigerator.

I do think they could have done a better job of bulking these up by adding in some chia seeds. But I'm sure if these prove popular they would add more flavors than just vanilla. And based on the packaging, they seem to check off a lot of boxes: kosher, gluten-free, and contains no added sugars beyond what is naturally in these products.

Overall

These are alright. I do think you can make it better at home with minimal effort.

Would I buy this again? I might keep another on hand, but in all honesty, this would be an easy copycat recipe. If you are interested, just let me know in the comments section!
