Trader Joe's February 2020 Fearless Flyer Matchups

A collage of 4 different Trader Joe's products

Welcome to the first product specific Fearless Flyer of the year. My goal here with this Trader Joe's February 2020 Fearless Flyer Matchups are to match the products featured with reviews from this blog and from around the web.

If there is a picture next to the product, it is matched with a review from this blog. If it is just a link, then it is a review on a different site. If there is neither, that means I couldn't find a review to match up with that product.

Lot's of fun new items to check out this month. Some old ones, some classic items featured. Happy Shopping! I hope this helps you work on your next shopping list!

Trader Joe's Almond Flour Chocolate Chip Cookie Baking Mix

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Almond Flour Chocolate Chip Cookie Baking Mix

In my experience, there have been a number of products where the directions are less than perfect. Some have been outright wrong. However, there are some products where the directions could have been written a bit clearer which includes this Trader Joe's Almond Flour Chocolate Chip Cookie Baking Mix.

A fully baked box of Trader Joe's Almond Flour Chocolate Chip Cookies

Making these

So as a part-food writer, foodie at heart let's go over some basics of recipes. Most of us do it wrong.

What I mean by that is most of us read the directions as we go. So we get the ingredients out and don't always manage the read the directions all the way through. Or worse, we make assumptions about what should go in when. However, in reality, a recipe should be read first and then read a second time for follow-through.

This is one of those products that if you don't read the directions, this product won't work for you. When it first debuted I was shocked to see people complaining of it failing.

Usually, mixes should go 1-2-3. However, with a mix, it is easy to assume that every ingredient goes in and you pop it in the oven and in 10 minutes you'll get the pictured cookies.

So here is how I foresee a few people seeing the directions: Add 3 tablespoon butter or oil, 2 teaspoon vanilla extra, and 3 tablespoon milk to mix.

In reality, if I could reword what you need to do, it would read something like this add 3 tablespoon butter or oil, 2 teaspoon vanilla extract and 1 tablespoon milk + 2 tablespoon more if necessary until it looks like a dough.

The vast majority of the complaints are going to come from the confusion about the milk. I found that after 1 tablespoon of almond milk it looked like familiar cookie dough.

That's when I didn't add in the other 2 as they weren't necessary.

Now, this is an interesting item because when I originally reviewed Trader Joe's Almond Flour it already had a chocolate chip cookie recipe on the back. Granted the one on the back wasn't vegan, but it was still gluten-free.

Review & Taste

And what came out of the oven was good chocolate chip cookies for gluten-free cookies. There was a difference but nothing major.

But as non-gluten-free individual I thought this product is kind of redundant. We already had something similar to the recipe on the bag of almond flour. To be honest, I liked that recipe better. This mix is quicker but not by much.

But this mix won't save you if you just dump everything you think you should in.

But the cookies were on the soft side so if you like crispy leave them in for another minute or two.

Overall

For $4.99 for a mix that makes just 12 cookies, it isn't going to save you that much. You'll be able to make far more cookies from the bag of almond flour in the same aisle.

Would I buy this again? Trader Joe's Almond Flour Chocolate Chip Cookie Baking Mix is a pass from me.

Trader Joe’s Microdermabrasion Scrub Review: Spa-Like Exfoliation at a Budget-Friendly Price

An unopened package of rader Joe's Microdermabrasion Scrub on a white surface

Exfoliating doesn't have to mean splurging on a $70 skincare product. Enter: Trader Joe's Microdermabrasion Scrub, a $5.99 facial exfoliator promising smoother skin, a polished glow, and a spa-like experience at home, minus the spa price tag.

Review

I love a good shower scrub. I really do like Trader Joe's Lavender Salt Scrub. But the scent and texture are way too intense for my face or probably anyone else's for that matter.

At first glance, the packaging is simple-nothing flashy, just a basic squeeze tube with a blue label. But inside is where it gets interesting.

The scrub has a thick, creamy texture loaded with fine exfoliating crystals. Unlike many drugstore scrubs that use large, scratchy particles (looking at you, apricot scrub), this one feels like a professional-grade exfoliator. It's gritty enough to feel effective but not harsh or abrasive, provided you use a gentle hand.

When I first used it, I applied it to damp skin, gently massaged it in for about 60 seconds, then rinsed. The results? Noticeably smoother, softer skin after just one use. My skin felt clean, but not stripped, and makeup applied more evenly afterward.

If you have sensitive skin, you'll want to go easy with it-maybe once or twice a week. The crystals are potent, and overdoing it can lead to irritation. But used correctly, it's one of the best exfoliators I've found in this price range.

This isn't going to replace a professional microdermabrasion session, but for an under-$6 product that's always stocked at your local Trader Joe's, it's surprisingly impressive.

How to Use

  1. Cleanse your face and leave skin damp.
  2. Apply a small amount of scrub (pea-sized is enough).
  3. Gently massage in circular motions for 30-60 seconds.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
  5. Pat dry and follow with your favorite moisturizer or serum.

Tip: Use 1-2 times per week. Avoid broken or irritated skin, and always follow up with sunscreen during the day.

FAQs about Trader Joe's Microdermabrasion Scrub

The following are commonly asked questions about this product;

Is this scrub good for sensitive skin?

It can be, but use caution. The exfoliating particles are fine but potent-start slow to avoid irritation.

Does it contain microbeads?

No. It uses silica (a naturally derived mineral) for exfoliation-not plastic beads.

Is there a strong scent?

It has a light, clean fragrance-nothing too strong or lingering.

Where can I buy Trader Joe's Microdermabrasion Scrub?

This is not currently a seasonal product and can be purchased at Trader Joe's. This can also be found through third-party sellers on Amazon.com.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's Microdermabrasion Scrub is one of those under-the-radar beauty products that punches way above its price point. If you're looking for an exfoliator that delivers real results without breaking the bank, this is one to grab on your next Trader Joe's run.

Just remember-it's powerful stuff, so treat it like a treatment, not a daily cleanser. Use it wisely, and your skin will thank you.

Non Food Items, Trader Joe's Trader Joes, Trader Joes Review

Trader Joe's Cucumber and Citrus Face and Body Wipes

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Cucumber and Citrus Face and Body Wipes

Another new find in the health and beauty aisle is Trader Joe's Cucumber and Citrus Face and Body Wipes. However, this is an interesting find as Trader Joe's already sells Micellar Cleanser and Make Up Wipes are already on shelves.

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Cucumber and Citrus Face and Body Wipes

A comparison between products

However, both are priced at $3.99. So what is the difference?

First off, this package contains 64 wipes as opposed to the 20 wipes in the micellar.

And then there is the fragrance. The micellar had no fragrance which is great for those who are sensitive to it. These are scented wipes. And I adore the scent. I mean I opened the package and smelled these like, "mmmmm."

Review

They were citrusy but also had that subtle smell of cucumber. But it was nothing that I found irritating especially nice I used these as makeup wipes. However, I know some people are sensitive to smells so that might have to be a consideration for some.

Overall did a pretty good job as makeup wipes. Foundation and most eye makeup came off pretty easily. Mascara was pushing it in terms of performance. I found that these wipes would need more moisture in order to get mascara off without much tugging.

Overall

However, at the end of the day, it really comes down to whether or not you can tolerate the fragrance here. Otherwise, they seem to be on par with most other wipes on the market. Plus, overall they are a better value than the Micellar just in quantity per package.

Would I buy this again? While this is no replacement for my Makeup Eraser cloth, Trader Joe's Cucumber and Citrus Face and Body Wipes do make a nice one-time use wipe for on the go.

Now, if you have tried these, especially with kids, let me know how they work below.

Non Food Items, Trader Joe's Trader Joes, Trader Joes Review

Trader Joe's Jelly Bean Hearts

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Jelly Bean Hearts

As soon as the holidays were over, it seemed we had a week of normalcy and then the next holiday is upon us: Valentine's Day. While not a huge holiday for some folk, there is a growing number of seasonal items related to this day that are making their way back on shelves.

Review

If you are a fan of Trader Joe's Xs and Os Gummies, Trader Joe's Mini Heart Cookies, or even Trader Joe's Lemon Cookie candle, they have made their way back onto shelves this year. But as always be warned, anything seasonal or limited run has the risk of not being seen again.

However, Trader Joe's Jelly Bean Hearts do make a solid addition to the growing line of Valentine's Day items.

Now I'm pretty sure I've seen a misshapen jelly bean or two in my life. I'm pretty sure someone said, "look it looks like a heart." Someone probably thought about that and decided to market them as Valentine's Day candy.

But what comes out of this little bag is a good-tasting Jelly Bean. If you are familiar with the somewhat seasonal variety of jelly beans that Trader Joe's puts out around Easter time, then you are familiar with the quality.

If you've ever had bad cheap jelly beans then you know it ends up pretty flavorless and waxy. Both the Easter-themed beans and these are quite fruity despite the vagueness of fruit mentioned in the ingredients.

While the ingredients mention pineapple, orange, and apple I was tasting anything but those flavors. For me, it seems the three flavors are something closer to black currant (red with black spots), cranberry (red), coconut (white), and strawberry (pink).

Like any bag of jelly beans, I wasn't wild about the coconut ones as they reminded me of what suntan lotion probably tastes like.

Now speaking of the ingredients there does not seem to be any gelatin present, but there is beeswax listed which would not make this a vegan-friendly item.

Overall

However, for $0.99 this is inexpensive, affordable, and they taste pretty well made. So if you like them buy a few because this is probably a really limited run.

Otherwise, you'll be stuck waiting for Easter with the next batch of jelly beans which are far more diverse in flavors.

Would I buy this again? Yes, for me Trader Joe's Jelly Bean Hearts is worthy of a repurchase.
