Trader Joe's Vegan Pasta Bolognese

Trader Joe's Vegan Pasta Bolognese box unopened on a grey surface

No. You aren't seeing double. And yes, there are two vegan bologneses hitting shelves. The first is a sauce that comes in a jar. The other is located in the freezer section and contains red lentil pasta. Otherwise, they kept the packaging virtually identical.

A fully cooked Trader Joe's Vegan Pasta Bolognese with the box next to it
This dish won't win any beauty awards.

The taste

Now despite this being vegan, you might be inclined to think this is gluten-free. Despite the use of the red lentil pasta this item does contain wheat in the ingredients.

So depending on your dietary preferences this may or may not be in the running.

But most important to me is always the taste. I'm always worried about pasta in the microwave. Pasta can get funny tasting if not downright mushy and gross in the microwave if caution isn't followed.

So I stuck with the shorter end of the directions on the package.

What comes out of the box is nothing more than most freezer meals in a plastic bowl with thin plastic that is meant to be punctured during cooking.

What came out of the microwaved was pretty close to what appeared on the original packaging minus some obviously freshly chopped parsley.

The end result wasn't bad. The pasta was al dente which is pretty impressive considering the only cooking directions provided were for a microwave.

It's not a terribly pretty dish to look at. Perhaps if red lentil pasta wasn't used it might have a more appetizing appearance rather than all red and orange.

But in terms of taste, it was just ok. There are plenty of good vegan meat substitutes. But this didn't taste meaty. I mean Trader Joe's Beefless Ground Beef is solid and has been for some time as has the vegan soy chorizo. Both mimic meat well.

But this just didn't. The "meat" just blended into the sauce and seemed pretty textureless.

What a bummer. You might also find that it is missing one other element: I found mine needed the extra punch of some parmesan cheese. If you really want to keep things vegan then reach for some nutritional yeast.

The packaging

This is pretty standard packaging for a freezer meal. It comes in a box with a container you heat the dish upon. The meal has a plastic film for keeping it fresh and using in the microwave.

Overall

For $3.49 it is one of the better than some of the grab-and-go frozen meals but only seems about the middle of the road in terms of items to reach for.

Would I buy this again? For me, this is alright. It doesn't rival the Indian entrees, but if those were all sold out, I'd maybe reach for one. But for the most part, this one is ok to skip.

Trader Joe's Limoncello Review: A Sweet Sip of Sunshine

Trader Joe's Limoncello bottle on a white surface

When life hands you lemons, Trader Joe's hands you limoncello. This sweet Italian liqueur is meant to capture the essence of sunshine in a bottle. And at $10.99 a pop, it's cheaper than a flight to the Amalfi Coast. But does this bottle bring a real taste of Italy or just a sugar high?

Trader Joe's Limoncello bottle on a white surface
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Review

Trader Joe's Limoncello is a bright, lemon-flavored liqueur made in Italy. It's bottled in a sleek, sunshine-yellow container that's as eye-catching as the drink inside. With a sweet, citrusy aroma and syrupy consistency, it practically begs you to chill it, pour it, and pretend you're sipping it seaside.

First off, let's talk aroma. When you open the bottle, you're hit with a burst of lemony goodness-it's like someone squeezed a dozen lemons right under your nose. It's sweet, citrusy, and oh-so-inviting.

The first sip? It's like drinking liquid Lemonheads candy. Smooth, sweet, and lemon-forward, but without the sour punch that might make your eyes water. It's definitely on the syrupy side-think dessert drink, not refreshing spritzer.

If you're expecting a sharp, zesty kick, you might be a bit let down. This is more sweet than tart. It's tasty, but some might find it a bit one-dimensional. Personally, I found it a fun, easy sipper-especially when served ice cold.

One thing to keep in mind is the sweetness. It's rich, syrupy, and almost borders on too sweet, depending on your tolerance for sugary liqueurs. That said, it's versatile, affordable, and perfect for adding a lemony zing to your cocktail game.

Information from the back of the bottle describing the product and surgeon general's warning.

How to Serve

  • Neat: Serve it ice-cold, straight from the freezer, in a small glass.
  • Cocktails: Mix with vodka and sparkling water for a refreshing spritz.
  • Desserts: Drizzle over ice cream or use it to flavor baked goods like cakes and muffins.
  • Tonic Twist: Combine with tonic water and a squeeze of fresh lemon for a fun, fizzy drink.

Creative Uses

  • Limoncello Mojito: Add mint, lime, and soda water for a lemony spin on the classic.
  • Fruit Salad Dressing: Drizzle a little over fresh fruit for an adult-friendly treat.
  • Baking Buddy: Fold a splash into frosting or cake batter for a zesty kick.
  • Sorbet Drizzle: Pour over lemon sorbet to double down on citrusy goodness.

FAQs about Trader Joe's Limoncello

The following are common questions about this product.

What is Limoncello?

Limoncello is a liqueur made from the rinds of lemons. It can also be made with some lime leaves. In order to make limoncello, a neutral spirit is added to the rinds of lemons which will extract the oils and flavor from the rinds. Simple syrup is then added to make it a liqueur.

How should I drink it?

Limoncello is a digestif. In other words, it is usually served at the end of a meal. It is served ice cold and in a very small glass. This is something that should be sipped. This isn't something you are going to want to down an entire glass of. And yes, the colder this is the better it is.

What if I don't enjoy drinking this as is?

If you aren't in love with limoncello after buying it, here are some suggestions for enjoying this: add a small splash to some whipped cream, add some seltzer to cut the sweetness to make a spritzer, or add some to a sorbet.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's Limoncello is a fun, affordable way to bring a taste of Italy into your home. It's sweet, smooth, and easy to sip-perfect for desserts, cocktails, or just enjoying ice-cold on a warm day. While it might be a little sweet for some, it's definitely worth a try if you're a lemon lover looking for a budget-friendly treat. It's also a time saver if you aren't making your own at home.

Trader Joe's Mini French Baguettes Review: A Little Loaf Goes a Long Way

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Mini French Baguettes

Few things beat the smell of freshly baked bread, especially the kind that comes out of your oven with minimal effort. Trader Joe's Mini French Baguettes promise exactly that, a warm and cozy carb moment without the fuss of kneading, rising, or praying your yeast cooperates. They are small, convenient, and ready in minutes, which makes them one of those freezer items that always feel like a good backup plan.

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Mini French Baguettes
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Review

Trader Joe's Mini French Baguettes come in a box of six and bake directly from frozen. There is no thawing and no overnight rise. Just straight into the oven and about four to six minutes later you have warm, lightly crisp bread that smells like you worked much harder than you actually did.

The truth is, these look more like breadsticks than traditional baguettes. They are short and narrow, not long and slender. Once baked, they stay on the pale side even after you hit the recommended cooking time. They also turn out lighter in color than the photo on the box suggests. That does not mean they lack flavor, but if you expect a deep golden crust you may want to leave them in the oven for an extra couple of minutes.

Texture wise, these lean soft rather than crusty. The exterior has a gentle crunch, but it is not the shattering crust you get from a true French bakery loaf. The inside is fluffy and tender with a nice chew. They taste freshly baked, and the aroma that comes off the tray is enough to get people wandering into the kitchen asking when dinner is ready.

Flavor wise, they are mild, clean tasting, and very versatile. They pair beautifully with salted butter, and if you want to elevate the experience then the New Zealand Grass Fed Butter or the French Cultured Butter from Trader Joe's takes them into full treat territory. They also make an excellent sponge for pasta sauce, soup, stew, or anything you want to sop up from the plate.

If these are sold out, the closest comparison is the Parbaked Ficelles in the fresh bread aisle. Those are larger, more traditionally baguette forward, and also freeze well. If you want more crust, the ficelles are the better choice. If you want a quick personal sized breadstick style option, the Mini French Baguettes do the job.

These disappeared from my sheet pan faster than I could take photos which, honestly, is probably the best review any bread product can get.

Nutritional information and ingredients in Trader Joe's Mini French Baguettes

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve warm with salted butter or garlic butter
  • Slice and top with bruschetta, pesto, or tapenade
  • Pair with soups like tomato, French onion, lentil, or chowder
  • Use as mini sandwich rolls for chicken salad or deli meats
  • Cut lengthwise and make mini garlic bread sticks
  • Serve with pasta dishes to soak up sauce

FAQs about Trader Joe's Mini French Baguettes

The following are commonly asked questions about this product:

What do Trader Joe's Mini French Baguettes taste like?

They have a mild flavor, a soft interior, and a light crisp exterior.

Do they need to thaw?

No. You bake them directly from frozen.

Can I bake them longer for more crust?

Yes. A couple of extra minutes helps develop a better golden finish.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's Mini French Baguettes are not going to replace an artisan loaf from a local bakery, but they are a dependable freezer staple that delivers warm, tasty bread in minutes. They bake quickly, pair with almost anything, and make even a simple meal feel a little more special. They lean more breadstick than baguette, but they are still a solid option for people who want the freshly baked experience without committing to making bread at home.

For $4.49, they are an easy yes and something I would buy again, even if I still gravitate toward the parbaked ficelles when I want a more traditional French loaf experience.

Bread, Frozen, Trader Joe's Trader Joes, Trader Joes Review

Trader Joe's Crispy Peanut Butter filled Milk Chocolate Peanuts Review: These Are Nuts, Literally

Trader Joe's Crispy Peanut Butter Filled Milk Chocolate Peanuts unopened

Chocolate and peanut butter rarely miss. Trader Joe's knows this, which is why their shelves are filled with variations on the theme. Peanut butter cups, dark chocolate versions, mini versions, even seasonal versions. So when these Crispy Peanut Butter Filled Milk Chocolate Peanuts first appeared, I was immediately curious. The concept is impossible to dislike. Peanut-shaped bites filled with sweet peanut butter and coated in milk chocolate with a crispy layer tucked inside. It is the sort of whimsical product Trader Joe's dreams up when someone in product development decides peanut butter cups just need to be a little extra.

Trader Joe's Crispy Peanut Butter Filled Milk Chocolate Peanuts unopened
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Review

Trader Joe's Crispy Peanut Butter Filled Milk Chocolate Peanuts come in a small bag, and when I say small, I mean you could accidentally finish the whole thing while "tasting" them for review purposes. You get roughly a dozen pieces, each shaped like a little peanut, which adds to the charm.

Flavor wise, these are essentially peanut butter cups with a twist. The filling is sweet, creamy peanut butter with pockets of crispiness that make each bite a little more fun than the standard cup. The crisp layer is what makes these stand out. It gives a light crunch that breaks up the sweetness and adds texture.

The peanut shape is adorable and absolutely makes these more playful than they have any right to be. Visually, they are cute enough to put out in a small bowl at a party, even though you may regret sharing them.

Now onto the chocolate. Trader Joe's excels at dark chocolate, but milk chocolate is where they sometimes stumble. In this product, the chocolate coating is the weakest part. It is a little chalky and not as smooth as the milk chocolate used in their mini peanut butter cups. It is still good enough to enjoy, but it does not reach the melt in your mouth quality that the dark chocolate peanut butter cups consistently achieve.

Sweetness wise, these land squarely in crowd pleasing territory, not too sweet and not too salty. The peanut butter filling is the highlight, and the crispy bits make it a surprise bite for anyone who loves texture.

For two dollars and sixty nine cents, they are a fun treat, even if the bag feels small. Honestly, that might be a blessing in disguise, because if there were more, they would mysteriously vanish.

And yes, if you want to keep them all for yourself, feel free to steal my tactic. When my friends asked whether they were good, I told him they were terrible. They walked away. It worked perfectly.

Serving Suggestions

  • Add to a candy board for parties
  • Sprinkle over ice cream for a crunchy peanut butter topping
  • Mix into homemade trail mix with pretzels and roasted peanuts
  • Chop and fold into cookie dough for a surprise bite
  • Use as a topping on brownies or a peanut butter pie

FAQs about Trader Joe's Crispy Peanut Butter Filled Milk Chocolate Peanuts

The following are commonly asked questions about this product:

What do these taste like?

A peanut butter cup with added crispiness and a fun peanut shape.

How many pieces come in a bag?

Around twelve pieces, depending on the batch.

Are they very sweet?

They are moderately sweet with a smooth peanut butter filling.

An open bag of Trader Joe's Crispy Peanut Butter Filled Milk Chocolate Peanuts

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's Crispy Peanut Butter Filled Milk Chocolate Peanuts are cute, crunchy, and undeniably snackable. They take the classic peanut butter cup concept and give it a little twist with texture and shape. While the milk chocolate coating is not the store's strongest, the filling and crispiness make these enjoyable. They are not replacing the dark chocolate peanut butter cups any time soon, but they are a fun treat to grab if you want something playful and peanut butter forward.

I would buy them again, especially when I want something quick, small, and sweet. However, since the publishing of this post, these have been discontinued.

Chocolate, Dessert, Trader Joe's Trader Joes, Trader Joes Review

Trader Joe's New Zealand Salted Butter Review: A Better Butter from Down Under

An unopened package of Trader Joe's New Zealand Salted Butter

Trader Joe's sells several butters, but the New Zealand Salted Butter has quietly become one of the most loved options in the dairy case. It is grass fed, imported, and noticeably richer than standard American sticks. If you have ever tried Kerrygold and wondered whether Trader Joe's version measures up, this butter sits firmly in that same category of creamy, golden goodness.

For anyone who bakes, cooks, or just wants something better to spread on warm bread, this is one of the standout staples worth knowing about.

An unopened package of Trader Joe's New Zealand Salted Butter
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Review

Trader Joe's New Zealand Salted Butter comes in an eight ounce block, which is smaller than the stores French Cultured Butter at eight point eight ounces. The shape makes it look even smaller, but the difference is minimal. It is simply pressed into a compact block instead of long sticks.

The color tells you everything. It has that deep yellow tone that grass fed butter is famous for, a color that comes naturally from cows grazing on grass rather than eating feed. The flavor follows suit. It is rich, clean, savory, and has a fullness that standard American butters simply do not deliver.

If you are used to national brands, this will feel like a major upgrade. The mouthfeel is smooth and velvety, and it melts beautifully whether you spread it on a slice of warm baguette or drop it into a skillet. For baking, the fat content and flavor give you better browning and a richer taste. For everyday eating, it turns something as simple as bread into a treat.

Compared to Kerrygold, Trader Joe's version is remarkably close. Both have that signature grass fed flavor and golden color. The Trader Joe's butter is slightly firmer when cold, but once it softens it spreads just as nicely.

Compared to the French Cultured Butter from Trader Joe's, the difference is in the flavor profile. The cultured butter has tang, almost like crème fraîche, while the New Zealand Salted Butter is cleaner and more straightforward. If you want bright, tangy richness, choose the cultured. If you want pure, creamy butter flavor without the tang, this is the winner.

The only downside is the packaging. There are no tablespoon markings, which is frustrating for bakers who are used to American stick butter. Unless you weigh your ingredients, you may need to eyeball it. But taste wise, this butter earns its spot at the top of the Trader Joe's butter lineup.

Trader Joe's New Zealand Salted Butter nutritional information and ingredients

How to Use It

  • Whip with honey or salt for a simple compound butter
  • Spread on warm baguettes, ficelles, or croissants
  • Stir into mashed potatoes or rice for extra richness
  • Use in baking for cookies, scones, and pastries
  • Melt over vegetables, seafood, or steak
A side by side comparison between Trader Joe's New Zealand Salted Butter and Trader Joe's Cultured Butter
Trader Joe's New Zealand Salted Butter is on the left and Trader Joe's Cultured Salted Butter is on the right. The New Zealand Butter is just a hair more yellow than the one on the right.

FAQs about Trader Joe's New Zealand Salted Butter

The following are commonly asked questions about this product:

Is Trader Joe's New Zealand Salted Butter grass-fed?

Yes. The deeper yellow color and richer flavor come from grass-fed dairy.

Is it similar to Kerrygold?

Very. The flavor, texture, and richness are comparable.

Does it contain cultures?

No. It is not a cultured butter. For a tangier flavor, choose the Trader Joe's French Cultured Butter.

Can I bake with it?

Yes. It works beautifully in baked goods and adds noticeable richness.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's New Zealand Salted Butter is one of the best value grass fed butters on the market. It tastes luxurious without the premium price you would normally expect and works equally well spread on bread or used in baking. If you want a deeply flavorful, golden, creamy butter that rivals Kerrygold, this is a regular purchase worth keeping in your fridge.

I reach for this often and would absolutely buy it again. However, since the original publication of this review, this item has been off of shelves for some time. I hope one day to see it return, even if it is at a higher price.
